In the 1820s, Edgar Allen Poe was stationed at Fort Moultrie on Sullivan's Island near Charleston. During his weekend leave, Poe would escape to the Pavilion Hotel, located on the site of the King Charles Inn, to create his literary masterpieces. His time in the Lowcountry inspired The Gold Bug, a story about a mystical beetle that reveals a buried treasure.
